Fourth-year York University student and Local 1000A member Gnanaka Gnanadas is a recipient of the 2013 UFCW Canada’s Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu Scholarship, worth $1000.
“From when I started my first year to now, the tuition fees have gone up so it is very helpful for students because we don’t have a lot of money – we are trying to work part-time as well as study,” said Gnanadas, a part-time cashier who is also studying accounting. “I want to thank the union and encourage other people who don’t know about the scholarship to apply for it.”
Every year, UFCW Canada awards 18 Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu scholarships, worth $1,000 each, to members, their spouse or children enrolled in full-time studies at a Canadian university, college, or other recognized post-secondary institution.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE has been extended from February 20, 2014 to February 25, 2014.

Gavin's Entry: "100 words provides hardly enough space to describe how not just my union, but OUR union, UFCW Canada Local 1000A, has made a difference in our lives. For me personally, UFCW has given me security in an excellent job that has given me a wonderful work-family and the money needed to pay for my post-secondary education. The union has ensured that I get enough hours, a proper wage and the respect and dignity I required in a workplace. Thank you, from all of us in Real Canadian Superstore."
The advocacy work of the labour movement and social justice allies continues to contribute in a large part to increases in Ontario’s minimum wage, this time from $10.25 to $11.
The student minimum wage will also go up to $10.30 from $9.60. In addition, liquor servers’ minimum wage will rise from $8.90 to $9.55.
These increases take effect June 1, 2014.
UFCW Canada Local 1000A is calling on members to join labour and social justice allies in supporting the Women’s Annual Memorial Marches in February. The day of action honors the lives of missing and murdered women. Every year, community members come together to mourn and remember missing and murdered women through marches and spiritual ceremonies.
On behalf of all of us at 1000A, I’d like to wish you and your loved ones a happy new year and thank you for being part of the Local 1000A family.
The support and participation of our members helps us fight for and achieve fairness in your workplace and in your community.
2014 marks the 70th anniversary of our great union. We have come a long way from our early days as the Loblaws Workers' Council in 1944. During the years that followed, we have achieved many victories in the face of countless obstacles. It is a tradition that we continue today.
