The Loblaws Great Food and Superstore contract expires July 1, 2015 – and we need to hear from you! When your union bargaining committee sits down with Loblaws to negotiate your collective agreement, we rely on your input and suggestions to ensure that we know your priorities. The ability to work together to secure a fair contract is the union advantage. That’s why I encourage you and your co-workers to complete a quick bargaining survey. It is my promise that all proposals that we receive will be reviewed. I look forward to working with all of our Loblaws Great Food and Superstore members to ensure that we achieve a fair contract!
In Solidarity,
Pearl Sawyer – President UFCW Canada Local 1000A
On April 28, your union encourages you to join thousands across this province in observing the National Day of Mourning for workers killed or injured on the job.
On this day, we come together to remember workers killed, injured, or suffering from illness because of unsafe conditions at work. We come together to help create safer workplaces so workers can end their working lives in dignity and health – not premature injury, disease or death.
We remember lost and injured co-workers, friends and family members while renewing our commitment to safer workplaces under the slogan, “Remember the dead. Fight for the living.”
Congratulations to Stephanie Cantlay from Loblaws Great Food 1083 in Kingston! Stephanie takes home the February prize of $70 in PC gift cards for her winning entry in Local 1000A's Share Your Story contest!
Stephanie's Entry: "My union, UFCW Canada Local 1000A, has made a difference in my life by ensuring I have a stable job to return to. As a full-time student, it is a relief to just focus on my academics. When I return home for summer or winter breaks, I have a job to return to as well. In an economy that doesn’t focus on job security, I find comfort in returning to Great Food. Because of my union, I am represented with the hours and seniority I have earned in my 5 years with the company. My union has also supported me through the bursary program. Thank you for assisting me with my education."
In anticipation of a possible provincial election this spring, UFCW Canada Local 1000A members from across the province came together for election campaign training at the local union office in Woodbridge.
The stakes are particularly high in this election with Conservative Party leader Tim Hudak and his Work for Less agenda.
“In this election, we are encouraging each and everyone of our members to carefully consider what each leader and party is offering and to make their voice heard by voting,” said Dan Gilbert, Local 1000A Executive Vice President. “Being active in the political sphere is important so we can protect all that workers have achieved together.”
UFCW Canada Local 1000A welcomes the news that the Ontario government has recognized April 16, 2014 as Equal Pay Day.
The government’s decision comes at a time when Ontario women, on average, are paid 31 per cent less than men for work of equal value.
During the past year, President Sawyer and union member activists have lobbied the Premier and MPPs through the Equal Pay Coalition to acknowledge that the pay gap must be eliminated. The coalition of organizations, of which Local 1000A is a member, seeks the implementation of equal pay for work of equal value both through legislation and collective bargaining.
