Local 1000A and UFCW Canada Local 206 merged on May 1, 2016 to form UFCW Canada Local 1006A.

Brockville_Pride_WebRainbow flags flew high over Brockville July 19 as UFCW Canada Local 1000A members, activists and staff joined many others in marching through the city’s downtown.

“It is about standing up for human rights, gay rights and equality for everybody,” said Ian Stables, a Local 1000A activist and member of the Pride Advisory Group who helped organize the local union’s participation in the event.

Union-YesLensCrafters associates at Scarborough Town Centre have voted for the benefit of union representation by overwhelmingly choosing to become members of UFCW Canada Local 1000A.

The vote took place on July 18, 2014 and makes the Scarborough Town Centre location the fifth LensCrafters store to be represented by the local union.

keep-cool-this-summerWith summer in full swing, it’s important to remember to keep cool wherever you are.

Soaring temperatures mean your body is potentially at risk for heat stress, which occurs when your body’s cooling system is put under pressure.

According to Ontario’s Occupational Health & Safety Act, employers are legally required to take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances to protect workers. To prevent heat-stress related illnesses, the Ministry of Labour has guidelines for employers. These include developing policies and procedures to protect workers in environments that are hot because of hot processes and/or weather.

Workers Voted for Increased Wages, Better Scheduling, and Improved Working Conditions

LensCrafters workers at Fairview Mall, Markville Mall, Yorkdale Mall and Upper Canada Mall strongly voted in favour of accepting their first union contract with LensCrafters.

The union’s bargaining committee, which included workers from LensCrafters, fought hard to achieve a fair deal after a tough set of negotiations with the company.

This agreement benefits everyone: casual part-time, regular part-time and full-time workers. The duration of the agreement is from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2017. It contains significant wage increases retroactive to April 1, 2014 for all workers of the four unionized stores. Workers are guaranteed a minimum of 7.5 per cent increase over the next three years. The contract mandates, fairer distribution of hours for workers along with guaranteed minimums, opportunities for advancement, protection against unfair treatment and discipline, fair working conditions, plus many more improvements and protections.

IMG_6409Kretschmar worker Cartona Marjes is a big fan of Local 1000A’s Members’ Day. With prices going up, it can get quite costly to take the family for a day out.

That’s why she and her family has made a point of taking advantage of coming out for UFCW Canada Local 1000A’s Members’ Day- where discounted tickets to Wonderland and a free lunch was provided courtesy of your union.

Ellen-PruimCongratulations to Ellen Pruim from Craig and Jess' No Frills in Stratford! Ellen takes home the June prize of $70 in PC gift cards for her winning entry in Local 1000A's Share Your Story contest!

Ellen's Entry: "I have worked a place where there was no union to fight for our rights. Never want to go there again. It is great to have a union that will ensure treatment will be fair and our concerns heard. This being a new store we are celebrating one year this month, so I have not been a part of this union for very long. I am impressed with what I have read so far and look forward to many years to come. I know I will be able to count on assistance if needed just by reading the stories of others here."
