pearl3Helping our members achieve fairness at work and in their communities is at the heart of what we do at Local 1000A and 2014 was no different.

This year, we celebrated our 70th anniversary and continued our proud tradition of standing up for our members and their families.

At the bargaining table, we fought for and achieved improvements for our members. We negotiated 10 contracts covering more than 1,000 members. These include first agreements for Chubb Security and Compass Group at the Toronto Pearson International Airport Air Canada Lounges.  Additionally, members at four separate locations of LensCrafters at Markville, Fairview, Upper Canada and Yorkdale Malls achieved first agreements. We also bargained renewal agreements for Janes Family Foods, Nexcycle Plastics, Premier Tech, HMS Host, Louis Dreyfus, Wilson’s and Parker’s Your Independent Grocers.

caitlyn-carlaCongratulations to Caitlyn McPhaden from the Real Canadian Superstore in Ajax on winning the 70th Anniversary Contest Grand Prize — $700 in PC Gift Cards!

“It feels amazing,” said McPhaden. “When I found out , I couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘someone pinch me—I was over the moon.”

Caityln, a student at Durham College’s Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy program, said the prize comes at a much-needed time.

“I am grateful I was chosen — it takes a lot of weight off my shoulders financially,” she said.

North-Bay-Silent-Stand-InLocal 1000A members at Stuart Parker’s Your Independent Grocer in North Bay took part in a ‘Silent Stand-In’ at their store on December 6 to raise awareness and help end violence against women.

Along with handing out White Ribbons and informational cards, members, family and friends also held up posters showing statistical details to educate the public on the reality of violence against women in Canada.

we-remember-dec-24-imageDecember 24th marks the fifth anniversary of the Christmas Eve scaffold tragedy, in which four migrant workers were killed and another seriously injured after the scaffold that was supporting them collapsed at a Toronto worksite.

The company that supplied the swing stage involved in the deadly scaffolding collapse was fined December 4th for failing to ensure that the platform was in good condition – but the owners of the company have evaded jail-time, despite their admitted failure to provide a safe workplace.

Ottawa_Toy_DriveChildren at Ottawa-area shelters will be receiving hundreds of toys thanks to the efforts of UFCW Canada Local 1000A stewards and activists in the region.

Organized by the Ottawa Division, the Local 1000A Ottawa Toy Drive is now in its fifth year.

“There are so many families in shelters and the holidays are so hard on them,” said Caroline Brisebois, president of Local 1000A's Loblaws/RCSS/GFS – Ottawa Division. “The need is great - there is a lot of kids in the shelters with nothing."
