Franca-ScalzoFranca Scalzo knows first-hand the difference the union can make.

As a cashier who first suffered from carpal tunnel and later, as a Customer Service Representative who experienced shoulder problems due to work, Scalzo saw how hard UFCW Canada Local 1000A fought over the years to ensure that her rights were protected and she was treated fairly by her employer.

LabourDay2014Hundreds of UFCW Canada Local 1000A members and activists came together for Labour Day to march for fairness, justice and equality through the streets of downtown Toronto.

“Labour Day is about standing up for my rights and my co-workers’ rights,” said Lisa Van Altena-Walsh, who works at Loblaws Great Food. “I am here because I am proud of my union, and I am proud to be an active member—Labour Day to me is about celebrating what we have accomplished and have yet to accomplish.”

July-LanaGardnerCongratulations to Lana Gardner from Loblaws Great Food 1095 in Ottawa! Lana takes home the July prize of $70 in PC gift cards for her winning entry in Local 1000A's Share Your Story contest!

Lana's Entry: "I had a bad fall in 2006 and it is affecting me now. I need a knee replacement and I can only work certain amount of hours. Recently, WSIB did not approve my claim and it has been a huge emotional & financial stress dealing with this organization by myself. Thankfully, I have a union and WSIB Rep Martha, A.K.A My Angel, has drawn the papers for me and appealed this. Without her and 1000A, I would not have the strength to go on by myself fighting."

IMG_7516Motorcycle enthusiasts took to the roads of Southern Ontario for the 5th Annual Ride for a Cure, raising more than $10,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.

“At its core, Ride for a Cure is about doing everything we can to help find a cure for this disease that affects so many families across this country,” said Diana O’Brien, a Local 1000A activist who helped coordinate the event with Local 175 & 633’s John DiNardo.

The ride drew 50 participants. It started at Local 1000A’s office in Woodbridge, Ontario and ended at Local 175’s office in Mississauga, Ontario.

“On behalf of Local 1000A, I want to thank our amazing riders, supporters, staff, sponsors, and organizers Diana O’Brien and John DiNardo for making Ride for a Cure such a success year after year,” said Kevin Benn, Secretary-Treasurer for Local 1000A. "By coming together, we are making a difference in the lives of patients with leukemia."

pearl3On behalf of UFCW Canada Local 1000A, I am inviting you, your family and friends to join your union on Labour Day in standing up for fairness for all workers.

First observed in 1872 with the Toronto printers’ strike, Labour Day is now marked in communities across Canada.

Labour Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate and reaffirm our commitment to fighting for fairness, social justice and equality for all. It is also a time to reflect on the labour movement’s many achievements, which include leading the way in advocating for universal health care, vacations, sick days, maternity leave, 8-hour workdays, pensions, health and safety standards at workplaces and much more.

Today as in the past, unions continue to be at the forefront of fighting for a fairer and more just society, whether it be advocating for progressive childcare policies for families, lower tuition rates for students, or helping workers win rights in the workplace.
