Local 1000A and UFCW Canada Local 206 merged on May 1, 2016 to form UFCW Canada Local 1006A.
Twenty-five years ago, the lives of 14 young women were brutally cut short when a lone gunman entered their college, Ecole Polytechnique, and shot them dead. He wounded 14 others, including 10 women and four men.
Workers at the Ottawa Food Bank voted strongly on November 5, 2014 to join the UFCW Canada Local 1000A family.
“When workers come together, they can affect great change,” said Pearl Sawyer, Local 1000A President. “I want to welcome our newest members and congratulate them for showing incredible solidarity and strength in achieving union representation.”
With glowing red, gold and white lanterns, UFCW Canada Local 1000A marchers took to the streets of downtown Toronto, Ottawa and London to raise awareness and funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.
While Local 1000A marchers walked in support of members, families and friends affected by these blood cancers, some also marched in support of Hailey Delaney, the four-year-old daughter of Local 1000A member and Kretschmar packer Maria Loares. Hailey is battling T-Cell Leukemia.
“The fight against Leukemia and Lymphoma is a cause very close to our hearts,” said President Pearl Sawyer, who participated in the Toronto walk. “We carry the hopes, struggles and prayers of those suffering with this deadly disease with us as we walk for a cure.”
HMS Host workers at Toronto Pearson International Airport achieved improvements to wages, benefits, working conditions and much more in their new three-year collective agreeement.
Ratified on October 15, 2014, the agreement runs from December 12, 2013 to December 12, 2016.Those working in positions, where they do not receive tips, will see their wages increase by $1.30 over the term of the agreement. Those in positions, where they receive tips, will see $1 increase over the term of their agreement.
Local 1000A activist Shirley Walker was named the recipient of the 2014 "Pearl" award at the local union's 8th Annual Stewards Conference.
"I am humbled by this honour," Shirley said. "It's incredible and totally unexpected. I have been fortunate and I feel it is my responsibility as a citizen to use my voice for those who cannot speak up for themselves and to stand up for the most vulnerable in our society."
