Workers at the Ottawa Food Bank voted strongly on November 5, 2014 to join the UFCW Canada Local 1000A family.
“When workers come together, they can affect great change,” said Pearl Sawyer, Local 1000A President. “I want to welcome our newest members and congratulate them for showing incredible solidarity and strength in achieving union representation.”
One of the key issues for workers was being treated with respect and dignity in the workplace. As members of a union, workers now feel safe and respected.
“They wanted union representation and they worked towards it together —They did it for each other,” said Local 1000A Organizer Ray Ramkhelawan, who led the organizing efforts with the workers.
Founded in 1984, the Ottawa Food Bank assists about 48,000 people a month in the Ottawa area.
The bargaining unit is comprised of workers in the transportation and warehouse operation of the food bank.
