Local 1000A and UFCW Canada Local 206 merged on May 1, 2016 to form UFCW Canada Local 1006A.

IMG_5615In anticipation of a possible provincial election this spring, UFCW Canada Local 1000A members from across the province came together for election campaign training at the local union office in Woodbridge.

The stakes are particularly high in this election with Conservative Party leader Tim Hudak and his Work for Less agenda.

“In this election, we are encouraging each and everyone of our members to carefully consider what each leader and party is offering and to make their voice heard by voting,” said Dan Gilbert, Local 1000A Executive Vice President. “Being active in the political sphere is important so we can protect all that workers have achieved together.”

Local Union members were trained in key election campaign roles – such as voter contact and election day organizing.

“It was an amazing educational experience that really taught you about what is involved in a campaign and what it takes to get the vote out,” said Alfredo Difebo, a Local 1000A steward and Executive Board member.

Difebo said this election is a critical one for workers and their families.

“It’s people’s livelihoods at stake,” Difebo said. “If Tim Hudak is elected, it will hurt the ability of unions to protect workers’ rights.”

Stephen Lavalle, Unit Chair at Ryding Regency, said the party, which wins power, can have a huge impact through legislation that hinders or benefits workers.

“It is so important to be aware of who the candidates are, what they stand for, and what each party offers,” said Lavalle.

Adriana Georgakopoulos, a steward from a Real Canadian Superstore, said it’s important for young workers to pay as much attention as possible to this election.

“Young workers have to take this election seriously because it is our future at stake,” she said.
