pearl3On behalf of all of us at 1000A, I’d like to wish you and your loved ones a happy new year and thank you for being part of the Local 1000A family.

The support and participation of our members helps us fight for and achieve fairness in your workplace and in your community.

2014 marks the 70th anniversary of our great union. We have come a long way from our early days as the Loblaws Workers' Council in 1944. During the years that followed, we have achieved many victories in the face of countless obstacles. It is a tradition that we continue today.

In all those years, one thing, above all, has remained constant: Our members can always count on us, their union, to be in their corner in good times and bad, relentlessly fighting to protect their rights. Recently, Local 1000A members at Ryding Regency saw the lengths the union was willing to go to when workers were locked out by an employer bent on concessions. By coming together through their union, they prevailed. Also recently, Aspect workers, supported by the strength and relentless commitment of Local 1000A, won rights in their workplace. Today, the union is fighting on behalf of part-time workers at No Frills who are facing challenges in their workplace.

Finally, a strong union is the road to fair contracts. But that road begins with you. You are the key to your future. That’s why I encourage you to get involved in your union in 2014. Together, we CAN make fairness happen.

In solidarity,

Pearl Sawyer

President, UFCW Canada Local 1000A
