The advocacy work of the labour movement and social justice allies continues to contribute in a large part to increases in Ontario’s minimum wage, this time from $10.25 to $11.
The student minimum wage will also go up to $10.30 from $9.60. In addition, liquor servers’ minimum wage will rise from $8.90 to $9.55.
These increases take effect June 1, 2014. In addition, your union will continue its commitment to help make life better for Ontarians by advocating for legislative changes that provides workers, without union representation, greater access to unionization. As members of unions, workers gain rights, fairness and better conditions through the collective bargaining process.
Many in the labour movement, along with allies, are also calling for minimum wage to be increased to $14. The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) recently recommended the Ontario minimum wage be increased to $14.50 an hour by 2016 which would be 60% of the average industrial wage and would set the minimum wage as a living wage. The Ontario Liberal government's announcement falls well short of that.
