Local 1000A and UFCW Canada Local 206 merged on May 1, 2016 to form UFCW Canada Local 1006A.
At a time when workers are facing increasing attacks on their rights and livelihoods, Local 1000A members, activists and staff rallied together in downtown Toronto to show their support for a more fair, just and equitable society with a strong middle class.
“We are here today because we want fairness for all Canadians, not just union members,” said Andy Rostoks, a Local 1000A steward who works at a Valu-Mart in Scarborough (Guildwood). “I am a proud union member and Labour Day is about showing the kind of power we can have if everyone worked together.”
On August 10, Local 1000A hosted it's last community picnic of 2013 at Boyd Conservation Area near Toronto. In addition to games for adults and children, the picnic featured an all-you-can-eat BBQ. Thanks to all the volunteers and participants who made the picnic such a success!
The 7th Annual UFCW Canada Local 1000A Stewards' Conference has been scheduled for September 28-29. The conference will be held at the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North Hotel.
Deadline for registration is Friday, August 30.

For more than three months, the Labatt’s Brewing Company (a subsidiary of transnational ABInBev) has forced its employees in St. John’s Newfoundland out on strike for basic fairness.
Local 1000A’s Executive Board has elected Kevin Benn to fill the vacant Secretary-Treasurer position effective July 31, 2013 in accordance with the UFCW Canada constitution and the local union by-laws. He will serve for the balance of the term ending December 31, 2016.
“Kevin is an outstanding trade unionist who will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience into his new role,” said President Pearl Sawyer. “With his unwavering commitment to Local 1000A’s membership, I have every confidence he will make an exceptional Secretary-Treasurer.”
