Local 1000A and UFCW Canada Local 206 merged on May 1, 2016 to form UFCW Canada Local 1006A.

shirely-heiseStaff Representative Shirley Heise retired effective July 1, 2013 after more than 40 years with Local 1000A, including 15 years as a Staff Representative.

Local 1000A thanks Shirley for her outstanding service, commitment and dedication on behalf of our membership.

Shirley became a member of Local 1000A in 1972 when she was hired to work for the Loblaw’s meat department. In the mid-1980s, Shirley became a steward in a decision that changed her life. Since then, she has served on the Ottawa Divisional Board as secretary-treasurer and later, vice-president. She has also served many terms on our local union’s executive board and she was also a founding member of WIN (Women’s Issues Network). Shirley also trained stewards as a health and safety instructor for both our local union and the Workers Health and Safety Centre.

Shirley was also one of the first women in the Loblaws chain to work as an assistant meat manager. In fact, that was the position she had when the local union hired her in July 1998 as a Staff Representative.

Thank you Shirley for making a difference in the lives of many Local 1000A members. Local 1000A wishes you the best in your retirement.
