UFCW Canada Local 1000A members voted on September 20 to ratify a new contract with Ryding Regency Meatpackers Ltd, bringing to end a lockout that had spanned three weeks.
The contract covers more than 130 workers and runs from March 2012 to March 2016.
“In the face of adversity, our members showed tremendous courage, determination and resilience in coming together to achieve a fair contract for their future,” said Don Taylor, lead negotiator for the union’s bargaining committee. “The company tried to break the workers’ resolve and wear them down. Ultimately, they failed and were forced to back down on their unreasonable demands.”
UFCW Canada Local 1000A, which represents more than 130 locked out workers at Ryding-Regency Meatpackers Ltd, reached a tentative agreement with the company on Wednesday, September 18.
Ryding Regency locked out Local 1000A members on August 30, bringing months of negotiations to an abrupt end. In the 20 days since the lockout started, workers showed their courage, determination and solidarity in the 24-hour picket lines they held in front of the facility.
At a time when workers are facing increasing attacks on their rights and livelihoods, Local 1000A members, activists and staff rallied together in downtown Toronto to show their support for a more fair, just and equitable society with a strong middle class.
“We are here today because we want fairness for all Canadians, not just union members,” said Andy Rostoks, a Local 1000A steward who works at a Valu-Mart in Scarborough (Guildwood). “I am a proud union member and Labour Day is about showing the kind of power we can have if everyone worked together.”
