IMG_8388Hundreds of Local 1000A members and their families gathered at Boyd Conservation Area on August 6, 2011 for a day of fun and games as part of the Community Action Network (CAN)’s Toronto BBQ Picnic. The event brought together children and adults of all ages and cultures for a jam-packed day of activities, including soccer, an iron-chef cooking contest, a jumping castle, face-painting, balloon toss, potato sack races, bingo and all-you-can-eat BBQ.

executive_team_2011On August 9, 2011, Local 1000A’s Executive Board, in accordance with the local union bylaws, unanimously elected Kevin Benn to fill the vacancy in the position of Executive Vice President left by Pearl Sawyer when she became President on July 1, 2011. Kevin previously held the elected position of Recorder. Benn will serve as Executive Vice-President until the term expires on December 31, 2012.

Come out and celebrate the accomplishments that workers have struggled for and achieved over the years. Local 1000A encourages all its members and their families to partake in Labour Day activities within the communities where they live and work.

Local 1000A will have a formal presence at the Labour Day Parade in downtown Toronto and Sarnia, as well as the Labour Day Picnic in London.

no_frills_reading_contractLocal 1000A’s No Frills Bargaining Committee has requested the appointment of a conciliation officer to assist at upcoming meetings. In the meantime, the committee met with company officials on July 26 and July 27 and previously on July 14 and July 15.

IMG_7954In a warehouse in the middle of Scarborough, Hayden Harbin is hard at work, painstakingly cutting and gluing as he prepares costumes for the Toronto Caribbean Carnival. Billed as the largest cultural festival of its kind in North America, the carnival is a three-week long extravaganza that features the glittering costumes, sounds and tastes of the Caribbean.
