Local 1000A and UFCW Canada Local 206 merged on May 1, 2016 to form UFCW Canada Local 1006A.
Bowling lanes at Mississauga’s Classic Bowl were packed as Local 1000A members gathered to bowl for a cure for sickle cell anemia on Sunday, July 17. Teams, decked out in theme costumes from the Alley Cats to the Mighty Canadians, raised about $1,100 for Faces of Our Children, an organization dedicated to raising awareness, support and funding for the fight against sickle cell disease worldwide.
Members of the Local 1000A No Frills Bargaining Committee met with company officials on July 14 and July 15. This was the second set of meetings since both parties exchanged proposals on June 21 and the bargaining committee met on June 22.
After a marathon 20 months of negotiations, workers at Laura’s YIG in Ottawa voted overwhelmingly in favour of a new collective agreement with increases to wages and benefit contributions. Covering more than 70 workers, the contract was ratified on November 15, 2010 and runs from March 29, 2009 to November 2014.
Just when you thought the praise hadstopped, it would start up again. As negotiations wound down, Sodexo workers could not stop commending the work of their union, which helped them achieve their best ever contract. The recently ratified deal is full of gains and improvements for 115 Local 1000A members at Toronto Pearson International Airport and runs retroactively from October 2010 to October 2014.
Local 1000A wants to thank its members, together with their family and friends, for making the London CAN (Community Action Network) picnic a great success. The event took place at Springbank Park on July 9 and was held to provide members with a fun-filled day to relax and be with those they love.
Kathleen Baranik’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The Local 1000A member is quiet and soft-spoken and someone who has lived through more challenges than most people face in a lifetime.
