Being a good steward takes not only a passion to help fellow members but a willingness to learn. That is why Local 1000A is proud to congratulate 53 new stewards for completing the introductory Stewards Course this spring. Activists from a variety of workplaces (including Maple Grove, Green Grove Foods Corp, Loblaws, Great Food, Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills, and Janes Family Food Ltd), participated in the sessions in Toronto, Ottawa and London.

They learned about the local union, the labour movement and a steward’s duties. The courses were co-instructed by newly-trained instructors, Amanda Atwell, Leonna Turcotte, Fred Williams, and Glacier Samuel. Every year, Local 1000A offers courses in the spring and fall for interested
Stewards.

Local 1000A is proud to congratulate Executive Vice-President Pearl Sawyer for winning the 2010 OFL-ODRT (Occupational Disability Response Team) Workers’ Compensation and Disability Prevention Rights Award. Pearl is a tireless advocate and trailblazer in the world of workers’ compensation, helping improve life for workers injured on the job and/or those returning to work. Pearl is also an OFL Executive Board Vice-President and co-chair of the OFL Health and Safety and WCB Committees.

THUNDER BAY, ON - After 15 months of negotiations, employees at the Real Canadian Superstore in Thunder Bay, Ontario voted 98 per cent in favour of ratifying a five-year collective agreement with Westfair Foods Ltd.

TORONTO – After more than five months of on-and-off negotiations, a new five-year labour agreement between UFCW Canada Local 1000A and Loblaw Companies Ltd. has been ratified by 56 per cent, the union announced today.

It was a family affair for Erika Lickman at Local 1000A’s Community Action Network (CAN) BBQ picnic in London, Ontario. Lickman, who brought her daughter, son and husband to the event, was among the many local union members who gathered at Springbank Park on July 10, 2010 for a day of games, family activities and an all-you-can-eat BBQ.

The gold shirts were out in full force at Canada’s Wonderland for Local 1000A’s annual Members’ Day on June 27, 2010. Hundreds of members, decked out in the local union’s colour, flocked to Canada’s largest theme park with family and friends for a non-stop day of rides, food and attractions. The local union’s Community Action Network (CAN) initiative drew members from different stores and sectors all across the province.

Members’ Day, like other CAN events, is about giving back to Local 1000A members and their families, said Tony Soares, Secretary Treasurer of the local union and chair of the network, seen in the photo to the left with his daughter Caitlyn.“We wanted to provide our members with a day of appreciation where they can come with their family and friends and enjoy the facility at a reduced cost,” Soares said.
