Kevin-CorporonAfter 32 years of service to the labour movement, Local 1000A president Kevin Corporon retired July 1, 2011.

“I have had the good fortune and have been proud to work for and on behalf of our great union, activists and members,” Kevin said.

The local union’s Executive Board met on Tuesday March 8, and in accordance with its constitution and bylaws, Pearl Sawyer was elected to serve the balance of Kevin’s term, which ends December 31, 2012.

Kevin’s union career began in 1973 when the then-meat cutter apprentice helped the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen (Meat Cutters)-Local 114 unionize fellow workers at Canada Packers in Bramalea, Ontario.

In 1974, he became a shop steward, launching him on a journey that would see him help tens of thousands of workers across Canada. After serving on the bargaining committee in 1974 and being elected Divisional President for Local 114-2 in 1975, Kevin was hired as a full time union representative with the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union in 1979.

In 1985, Kevin began working for Local 1000A as Executive Assistant to the President and in 1987, he was elected Executive Vice-President.

In 2000, Kevin was elected President of Local 1000A and was re-elected in 2004 and 2008.

“Kevin has been a strong advocate of UFCW providing 32 years of support and leadership to the strength of our great union,” said Wayne Hanley, President of UFCW Canada. “I want to thank Kevin for his years of service and commitment.”
