Bowling lanes at Mississauga’s Classic Bowl were packed as Local 1000A members gathered to bowl for a cure for sickle cell anemia on Sunday, July 17. Teams, decked out in theme costumes from the Alley Cats to the Mighty Canadians, raised about $1,100 for Faces of Our Children, an organization dedicated to raising awareness, support and funding for the fight against sickle cell disease worldwide.
“We want to thank everyone who came out and helped make Local 1000A’s first annual Bowl for a Cure such a great success,” said Ray Ramkhelawan, a Local 1000A Organizer who helped coordinate the event with Local 1000A’s Co-Coordinator of Organizing Jonathan Lobo and Staff Representative Mike Derrick. “Your support in the fight against sickle cell anemia is deeply appreciated.”
Tiffany Carey, who works part-time at Larry & Pat’s No Frills in Welland, said she is glad she came out for the Bowl for a Cure.
“It’s for a good cause and it’s such a positive environment,” Carey said. “People don’t know what they are missing until they get involved.”
Steffany Boyd, who works full-time at Danny’s No Frills in Hamilton, said she also enjoyed herself.
“I like to bowl and it’s for a good cause and I am glad I came.”
