Ontario's Union for fairness, equality and respect at work.

UFCW 1006A members at the Indigo at Yorkdale Mall have ratified a new union contract.

The term of the contract is from May 3, 2024 to May 2, 2026 and covers 35 members at the bookstore.

“I was really happy with the new contract because we got so many improvements – we now have better sick day language and clear scheduling language,” said Joy Jumphol, a new steward and a negotiating committee member. “Everybody was happy with the contract.

Jumphol said having a union makes a big difference for workers at Indigo.

“Our experience with union representation provides a clear example for other Indigo workers on how to stand up to get better treatment for themselves and their co-workers,” Jumphol said.

The negotiating committee included members, San Ahmed, Joy Jumphol, Nayer Shikdar and Union Representatives, Amanmeet Singh and Joe Blythe.

“I am proud of our members at Indigo for showing tremendous unity and strength in achieving a fair union contract— member participation and solidarity are vital to securing improvements, protecting workers’ rights and building a fairer workplace,” said President Wayne Hanley. “Union representation empowers workers with a voice and ability to transform their workplace for the better.”
