Today, the ability to cast a ballot is taken for granted, but it took generations of Canadians fighting, advocating and challenging the status quo to ensure all citizens can vote. Thanks to their courage, all Canadians 18 years or older can vote.
As we watch the attack on democracy south of the border, we are left with a sober reminder. Rights today can be gone tomorrow, if we are not careful about protecting and preserving our democracy and our country.
That is why our participation is crucial in the upcoming federal election on Monday, April 28.
Voting is our opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to our country, and support programs that benefit our loved ones, friends, neighbours and community.
The choices our federal government makes impact so much that Canadians depend on: universal healthcare, pharmacare, dental care, childcare, housing access and affordability, and economic stability. So much is at stake.
Canadians are being urged to be careful of the information they are getting, particularly from social media. The head of Canada’s Foreign Interference Commission notes: “at this juncture, information manipulation (whether foreign or not) poses the single biggest risk to our democracy. It is an existential threat."
I encourage you to check out UFCW Canada's website to learn more about the upcoming election. This resource outlines the parties' promises on issues important to our members.
Your voice matters. Your issues matter. Whether you are young or old, this election is one of the most important of your lifetime.
