UFCW Canada Local 1006A members are facing unprecedented times due to the COVID-19 virus.
During these difficult and uncertain times, your union wants you to know that we are here for you now more than ever, to help you with the issues you face.
The rapid spread of COVID-19 is resulting in massive changes and challenges at many of the workplaces where our members work.
As always, our members are our number one priority and we are working hard to advocate for your rights and your safety.
We know you may have a lot of questions and concerns as this situation progresses. Please know your union representatives are only a phone call or an email away. You can count on us to help you with issues and concerns as they arise.
Union representatives will continue to service our membership. While assisting members during workplace visits, your union reps will undertake precautionary measures including hand washing and social distancing.
Your union has been advocating for our members to ensure they are properly compensated for their hard work during this pandemic and to ensure your health and safety is protected.
As a result, 1006A has made significant advances on behalf of our members at several workplaces through our advocacy.
Currently, your union has achieved premium pay during the pandemic for members working for No Frills, Loblaw Great Food and Superstores, Valu-Mart, and Your Independent Grocer, Loblaw Warehouse & Transport, Aspect, Maple Leaf Foods, Sofina Foods, Weston Bakeries, Swiss Chalet Corporate restaurants & HBC Warehouse.
Governmental action to contain the pandemic has meant the temporary closure of restaurants and lay-offs in many sectors including hotels, hospitality, service and laundry, where many of our members work.
For members that find themselves in a layoff situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, union representatives are working to ensure that language in the collective agreements is adhered to as it relates to layoff procedures. We have also created a new resource to help you navigate the benefit programs offered by the federal government.
We are monitoring the situation closely and are available to help you with issues that arise.
In the grocery industry, high demand means increased challenges for grocery workers, warehouse and transport workers. Your union is working hard to ensure your health and safety is protected. We have also helped secure improved safety measures, from plexiglass to distancing at the grocery stores to more breaks to allow you to wash your hands. We have created a resource guide to help grocery workers with frequently asked questions.
For stewards, please direct members with concerns to the union website for the union representative’s contact information. We encourage stewards to also ensure the union representative’s contact information is available on the union bulletin board in the workplace.
These are difficult and trying times for many of our members and all Canadians. We must do what we can to be kind and support each other during the weeks ahead. Remember your union is always there for you.
To all our members, thank you for your hard work on the frontlines.
