UFCW Canada Local 1006A is proud to congratulate long-time union representative Carmine Fiore on his retirement
“On behalf of 1006A, I thank Carmine for his decades of service on behalf of our members,” said President Wayne Hanley. "Carmine will be missed by his sisters and brothers across our local union. We wish him the very best in his retirement years.”
Carmine’s history with the labour movement dates back to the 1970s when he signed his first union card with UFCW Canada Local 175. At the time, the local union was trying to organize Darrigo, a grocery store in Toronto. While the employer closed the store down, Carmine’s passion for the union movement had just begun.
During the early 1980s, Carmine worked at a Loblaws store part-time while attending high school and at a Loblaws warehouse while attending university. In the summers, he worked at both. After university, Carmine became a Department manager with Loblaws. His need to stand up for fellow workers drove him to become a Local 1000A union steward in the mid-1980s.
In the years that followed, Carmine held a variety of roles with the local union, including volunteer organizer, instructor, divisional officer and executive board member.
He was working as a full-time produce manager when Local 1000A hired him in 1998.
“It is my passion for people and for the union movement that has kept me going all these years,” said Fiore. “It was always about ensuring people in the workforce were treated with respect and dignity.”
Carmine said he plans to remain involved with the labour movement in his retirement years. “The activism comes from the heart— you can’t ever walk away from it."
