After 36 years of service, Executive Vice President Pearl Sawyer has decided to retire.
A former packinghouse worker, Pearl served as Secretary-Treasurer of the PEI Federation of Labour before being hired by Local 1000A in 1982.
At Local 1000A, Pearl rose through the ranks, serving as Organizer, Director of Education and Research, Executive Assistant to the President, and International Vice-President of UFCW. From July 2, 2011 to April 31, 2016, she served as President of UFCW Canada Local 1000A.
“Pearl dedicated her life to improving the lives of workers across Ontario and the world,” said President Wayne Hanley. “Thank you for your decades of service to our members.”
Her dedication to championing the rights of all Ontarians is evident in her tenure as the longest serving Vice-President on the Ontario Federation of Labour Executive Board.
Since May of 2016, in the role of Executive Vice President, Pearl continued to champion the rights of all members as a leader on global solidarity initiatives. She served as a World Executive Board Member with UNI Global Union and as a UFCW Representative with UNI Commerce Global Steering Committee. As a senior pride ally advisor on UFCW OUTreach, she was a devoted advocate for LGBTQ rights.
Thank you for your lifetime of dedication to working families. Congratulations on your retirement Pearl!
