whiteribbonIt is a mission of hope for the members of Women’s Issues Network (WIN), who created and distributed thousands of white ribbons to raise awareness and help bring an end to violence against women.

Members and the wider public received ribbons, along with informational cards, as part of WIN’s White Ribbon Campaign in the weeks leading up to and on December 6— the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.  On this day in 1989, 14 women were murdered at Montreal's École Polytechnique simply because they were women.

pearl-award-2013LGBTQ activist and Ottawa-area steward Jackie Graticola, known for her “heart of gold” has been named the winner of the 2013 Pearl Sawyer Award.

“Her passion cannot help but bubble to the surface at every UFCW Local 1000A event,” wrote Mary Joe Eaton, last year’s Pearl Award winner, in her nomination letter for Graticola. “She never tires, she never stops smiling and she never stops waving our flag’s colours.”

This annual award is presented to a female member for assisting with initiatives for women, the labour movement and their community. WomensDay2013v2UFCW Canada Local 1000A flags flew high in downtown Toronto on Saturday, March 9, 2013 as activists and members gathered to mark International Women’s Day (IWD).

After attending a rally at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), the group joined thousands in marching from Bloor and St. George St. to Ryerson University.

“On behalf of Local 1000A, I want to thank our members and activists for coming out to celebrate International Women’s Day,” said President Pearl Sawyer. “I was proud to walk side by side with my fellow sisters and brothers in support of a just, safe and equitable society.”
