Mary-Joe Eaton wiped the tears off her face as she walked through crowds of applauding activists to accept the 2012 Pearl Sawyer Award.
“I will always remember and cherish this moment,” said Mary-Joe, a long-time steward at Kretschmar.
“I want to thank all my sisters and brothers at Local 1000A for this honour. What I do, I do to help others and make a difference, and to be recognized for that leaves me speechless.”
Established in 2005, the Pearl Award is annually presented to female members for assisting with initiatives for women, the labour movement and their community. It is named after Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer. With the exception of the nominators or nominees, WIN (Women’s Issues Network) Executive members select the recipient.
“Mary-Joe is a compassionate and dedicated activist who always puts members first,” said Rehya Yazbek, WIN Coordinator. “Over the years, I have seen her blossom into a confident, articulate and fearless leader who truly epitomizes the spirit of the Pearl Award.”
Diana O’Brien, a steward at Milton’s Real Canadian Superstore, nominated Eaton for the award, stating she has contributed so much to improving the lives of others.
“She is someone who has inspired many people especially those within our membership,” she said. “If there is a rally, march or cause that needs support, you can be assured she will be there.”
In addition to her role as a steward, Eaton is a member of the Joint Health Safety Committee at her workplace and sits on the local union’s Community Action Network (CAN) and WIN committees. She has participated in negotiations, raised money for leukemia and recently become a new instructor. Last but not least, she was elected to the Executive Board of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council earlier this year.
“On behalf of the officers and staff of Local 1000A, I am so pleased to congratulate Mary-Joe on her achievement,” said Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer. “She is a tireless activist and a relentless champion of workers not only in our union but all across our community.”
