Local 1000A activist Shirley Walker was named the recipient of the 2014 "Pearl" award at the local union's 8th Annual Stewards Conference.
"I am humbled by this honour," Shirley said. "It's incredible and totally unexpected. I have been fortunate and I feel it is my responsibility as a citizen to use my voice for those who cannot speak up for themselves and to stand up for the most vulnerable in our society."
Rainbow flags flew high over Brockville July 19 as UFCW Canada Local 1000A members, activists and staff joined many others in marching through the city’s downtown.
“It is about standing up for human rights, gay rights and equality for everybody,” said Ian Stables, a Local 1000A activist and member of the Pride Advisory Group who helped organize the local union’s participation in the event.
Local 1000A is preparing for an exciting celebration of diversity and culture with the quickly approaching Pride festivities in Toronto, that will involve people from around the globe showing their Pride, from June 20 - 29.

"The struggle for equality and fairness is one that unites us all," said President Pearl Sawyer.
Local 1000A Members marched in the annual parade, which began at Brockville Armouries and finished at Hardy Park.
