Under clear blue skies, UFCW Canada Local 1000A and Local 175 & 633 joined more than a million revelers in celebrating Pride 2013 on June 29 and 30 in downtown Toronto.
“Pride weekend is about standing up for a world free of discrimination and prejudice—a struggle that unites us all,” said Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer.
The event marked the first time that Local 1000A and Local 175 & 633 have joined forces for Pride Toronto.
Along with hosting a Streetfair booth, both locals also created a float featuring two giant rainbow arches. Activists, who were part of the float, also dressed up with flame balloons in the colours of the rainbow.
“It was amazing – so many people just loved our outfits and wanted to take photos with us,” said Jackie Graticola, a member of Local 1000A’s Pride Advisory Group. “The whole event went really well and we had a much bigger participation than last year.”
During the weekend, UFCW Canada activists engaged with tens of thousands from the LGBTQ community.
Toronto Pride is among the largest Pride celebrations in the world. Next year, the city will be hosting World Pride. Watch our website, Facebook and Twitter for more information leading to the event.
