Workers at the SilverCity movie theatre at Trinity Commons in Brampton have voted to join UFCW Local 1006A.
The online vote was conducted by the Ontario Labour Relations Board on October 2 and 3, 2024 for the group of approximately 90 workers.
“Everyone is very excited with the outcome of the vote,” said Sabrina Randhawa, a worker at the theatre. "It was a long fight, but honestly it will be worth it to achieve a union contract – having our rights written in stone will make a huge difference.”
Fairer wages, improved health & safety protections, better benefits and working conditions were the reasons workers sought unionization.
Local 1006A’s newest members work in a variety of roles at the theatre, including ticketing, concessions and maintenance.
“We are thrilled to welcome the workers at SilverCity to our union family,” said President Wayne Hanley. “Local 1006A has a proven track record of improving the rights of movie theatre workers – we look forward to negotiating a union contract that addresses the needs of our newest members."
The SilveryCity workers are the second group of Cineplex workers to join Local 1006A. Workers at the Cineplex movie theatre at Courtney Park in Mississauga joined Local 1006A in 2008.
