UFCW 1006A members at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), working as security guards, have ratified a new union contract.
The term of the contract is from May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2029 and covers 35 security workers.
"I thought it was a great contract and I was absolutely happy with the result,” said Mohammed Malek, a steward and member of the negotiating committee. “The reaction among members was a positive one filled with excitement because we made significant improvements. The union was exceptional and showed a lot of care for the membership.”
The negotiating committee included members, Mo Malek, Chris Thompson and Frank McDonaugh and Union Representative Jon O’ Connor.
“This new contract shows clearly why UFCW 1006A is the best union in Ontario for security guards,” said President Wayne Hanley. “The negotiating committee did an outstanding job securing significant gains for our members at MLSE. The support and unity of our membership were essential in achieving a fair contract.”
UFCW 1006A represents 8,000 workers in the security guard sector.
Highlights
- 17 per cent wage increase over five years
- Additional statutory day (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation)
- Ability for members who work full-time to use their 20 days of vacation allotment as single days if necessary.
- Secured 6 per cent vacation entitlement for all members with more than 5 years of service.
- Achieved drug coverage of $1,500 per year at 80 per cent for members working part-time
- Modified language on contracting out and guaranteed no reduction in full-time staffing
