UFCW 1006A member Jing (Cathy) Yang, who works at Loblaw Great Food, is one of the winners of our Share Your Pandemic Story contest!
Congratulations Jingl! Your union has awarded 20 prizes – worth $250 each – to members whose entries are selected in the Share Your Pandemic Story contest.
Here is Jing's story:
"When the COVID-19 virus was first discovered in China, I didn’t think much of how much that location would end up impacting my family and I. However, when politicians around the world started coining the term “Chinese Flu” and “Kung Fu Virus,” I, along with many others in the Asian-Canadian community, started becoming uneasy and worried.
It didn’t help when barely a week after the pandemic started, anti-Asian hate crimes started appearing on the news, about how normal people were being harassed for no reason but the colour of their skin. I started growing concerned for the safety of both myself and my family, and how this would affect me at work.
However, thanks to the union’s continuous fight against racism. As well as the ceaseless support that I’ve received from all my colleagues at work. I know that I will never have to worry about being discriminated against."
