Ontario's Union for fairness, equality and respect at work.

UFCW Canada Local 1006A is becoming the home of cannabis workers, with workers at a second Tokyo Smoke (979 Bloor Street West) location recently voting to join our local union.

UFCW Canada 1006A is proud to represent workers in the cannabis sector. In the last year, workers at Tokyo Smoke (Stoney Creek) and Superette (Ottawa) have voted to join our union.

“On behalf of UFCW 1006A, we are proud to congratulate our newest members from Tokyo Smoke in Toronto,” said President Wayne Hanley. “We are committed to be a strong voice for fairness, respect and dignity for workers in the cannabis sector across Canada.”

Workers unionized to raise the standards in the industry as a whole, hoping to lead the way and inspire more people in the cannabis retail sector to unionize.

The top three issues were: health and safety (dealing with abusive customers without security or support), wages and job security.

“It’s inspiring to see retail cannabis workers standing united and seeking representation in this new mostly unregulated industry,” said Lesley Prince, Organizing Director of 1006A. "Unionization is helping workers make real workplace improvements and giving them a voice when otherwise they had none.”
