Today, we mark an exciting and historic occasion as Local 1000A and Local 206 come together as one to form a stronger, more diverse and powerful local union, UFCW Canada Local 1006A.
As president of your new local union, I am proud and honoured by the opportunity to lead our united membership through this period of transition. Our great leadership team, composed of officers from both local unions, has extensive experience, knowledge and is committed to proudly serving and advancing the rights of our members.
We are dedicated to building upon the strengths and proud histories of both locals to create an even greater union with continued focus on membership representation and organizing.
As a result of this merger, we have increased strength in numbers with a membership of 35,000. Our members have the protection of a larger, more powerful union with greater resources, stability and support to take on employers at the negotiating table and to advocate on behalf of our members and their families on issues of importance to them.
Our union is now more diverse, with representation in a greater number of sectors, including grocery retail, restaurants, hotels, food processing, laundry, distribution and many more.
At Local 1006A, our main strength will come from you, the members.
To our activists who proudly served the membership of 1000A and 206, your skills, knowledge and experience will be vital as we embark on this new chapter in our union’s history.
To all 1006A members, you are our number one priority and we will work hard to protect and advance your rights at work and beyond. You can count on us to be in your corner, advocating for you everyday. We will be a force for fairness and justice in your workplaces and communities.
If you have any questions or problems at work, don’t hesitate to contact your union representative. We are here to help.
In Solidarity,
Wayne Hanley
President, UFCW Canada Local 1006A
