Hundreds of Local 1000A members and their families gathered at Boyd Conservation Area on August 6, 2011 for a day of fun and games as part of the Community Action Network (CAN)’s Toronto BBQ Picnic. The event brought together children and adults of all ages and cultures for a jam-packed day of activities, including soccer, an iron-chef cooking contest, a jumping castle, face-painting, balloon toss, potato sack races, bingo and all-you-can-eat BBQ.
“It was kid-friendly, family-oriented and well-organized,” said Michelle Pow, who is a Server and Steward at HMS Host at Toronto Pearson International Airport. She came with her son and husband to the event.
The Toronto picnic was the second CAN event of the year. The last one was held in London and the next one will be held in Ottawa on August 27, 2011.
Diane Wilmot, a Steward at Stephen's No Frills in Toronto, brought several family members to the event. The group included her five grandchildren, ranging in age from 16-months to nine-years-old. “The whole family had a blast - we wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”
Karen Tapscott, who works front end at Loblaws in Pickering, said the picnic gave members “a good chance to meet the brothers and sisters we don’t normally see.”
Proceeds, raised via the $5 entry fee per family, will be donated to the Faces of Our Children, an organization dedicated to raising awareness, support and funding for the fight against sickle cell disease worldwide.
“We want to thank all our members and their family members for coming out and making the event such a great success,” said Tony Soares, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 1000A.
