Long-time union activist Caroline Brisebois was presented with the 2010 Pearl Sawyer Award on June 19, 2010 at the local union’s fourth annual Stewards Conference in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Along with being the president of Local 1000A’s Ottawa Division, Brisebois is a steward and an assistant customer service manager at Loblaws in Vanier.
“I was floored by the award, it means a lot to be nominated by your brothers and sisters,” said Brisebois, who has been involved with the union for more than 20 years.
Established in 2005, the “Pearl” Award is presented to female members who have been instrumental in developing and implementing initiatives for Local 1000A women, the labour movement and their community. With the exception of nominators or nominees, executive members of WIN (Women’s Issues Network) select the recipient based on completed nomination applications.
“Caroline is a well-deserving recipient of the Pearl Sawyer Award,” said Rehya Yazbek, Coordinator of WIN and Staff Representative in the Education and Training Department of the local union. “She is a tireless union activist who lives to make life better for other members and the community at large.”Shirley Heise, Staff Representative with Local 1000A, said Brisebois is a woman who is involved with the community, her children, and her union. “She is energetic and in-your-face,” Heise said. “People want to participate for Caroline and it's a great asset to have her in our area.”
A member of WIN and CAN (Community Action Network), Brisebois is also known for her altruistic spirit. She has done everything from collecting toys for children in need to gathering toiletries for women in shelters.
One of Brisebois’ nominators noted that Brisebois is “a true organizer…and is very influential at getting her follow co-workers to come out to union activities.” While another nominator noted that she is “an excellent lady with a good heart.”
CONGRATULATIONS CAROLINE!
