UFCW 1006A member Marc Visca was proud to join young UFCW Canada activists from across the country for the Young Workers Internship Program (Phase 2).The program was focused on helping young workers develop new skills and build solidarity. Phase 2 is also about empowering young activists with the knowledge and experience of campaign building and political lobbying.
“It was really eye opening—I gained a much better view and insight to how the Canadian political system works,” said Visca, a member at a Toronto grocery store. “I learned about the union's efforts to help not only workers they represent, but everyone in all communities across the country.”
Young workers had the opportunity to participate in political campaigns during British Columbia’s most recent elections. Visca helped with canvasing, door knocking, and leafleting constituents.
“The second phase of YIP really broadened my view on how politics affect us everyday and what we can all do to help make our community stronger and better through volunteer work and helping educate those who may not know the big picture or anything beyond some media articles,” he said.
Visca said he was grateful for the opportunity to participate in the program.
"What UFCW means to me - it's a family and a community that always has open arms to help and guide everyone alike no matter their limits and boundaries,” he said. “It was truly a blessing to be given the opportunity to help my union and help the communities in BC. To pass on the knowledge to others and to help others is just the best feeling.”
“We are proud to support our members who are interested in participating in the Young Workers Internship Program,” said President Wayne Hanley. “This important program empowers young workers to take action to transform their workplaces and communities."
